We have all grasped at straws in the air to nudge our kids to conform to what we want them to do and we use promises to make that happen. It might not be the best idea. When you are a divorced parent, your helter-skelter, demanding existence seems to involve a lot of cajoling on your part to get your kids moving in the direction you want them to move.
